Put butt breakouts behind you

Butt acne is normal. There, we said it. While it shouldn't be, talking about spotty bums can feel embarrassing. But, like most types of acne, it's actually really common. Particularly when you consider that we sit on our bums all day, subject them to friction (bike riding — every. single. time.), put them into fabrics that don't breathe (yes those cute shorts that go perfectly with activity mentioned earlier), and generally treat them like, well, ass.

So to help you breakdown what causes these breakouts, here's our guide with a few cheeky ways to get rid of bum pimples.

But first, WTF is butt acne?

Often the breakouts on your butt are a skin condition called folliculitis. Folliculitis is a typical result of hair follicles becoming inflamed. At first, it may look like small red bumps or white-headed pimples around the hair follicles, but sometimes they can turn into painful, bigger spots.

So how do these annoying bumps find their way onto your beautiful bum? Just like the painful pimples that can pop up on our faces, butt acne can be caused by a bunch of different things like blocked, irritated or inflamed skin.

These bitchy bumps can often leave scars too – which tend to be more stubborn and difficult to heal on your bum. To make sure your bum stays as care-free and scar-free as possible, here are our tips and tricks for keeping butt acne away.

Tips to prevent butt breakouts

1. Wash regularly (and properly!)

Double cleansing isn't only for your face. Make sure you actually wash the skin on your bum – don't just let the shower water run over your bum (yeah, we're onto you). Pro tip: Wash your hair first, so there isn't any shampoo or conditioner residue left on your skin.

2. Reconsider your clothing

Switch to cotton underwear and give your bum a chance to breathe (*exhale*). Don't wear tight, friction inducing clothing (lycra, spandex, tight jeans). As comfy and casual as it is, switch out of your activewear after exercise or swimmers after swimming. No ifs or butts – you'll thank us later.

3. Shower straight after working out

We love getting sweaty but damn Betty, you've got to hit those showers. Sweat, heat and friction are what butt breakouts are made of. Jump in the shower as soon as you're done with your work out or any other kind of sweaty fun *wink*.

4. Exfoliate

Regular exfoliation will remove dirt and bacteria to avoid those unwanted flare-ups. But remember, keep it gentle. Aggressive exfoliation can really piss your skin off by causing further irritation and potentially making the condition worse. Clay is a beautiful and delicate way to gently buff any baddies away.

Our Australian Green Clay Bum Mask can do just that. This one-pot stop is an exfoliant-to-mask treatment, so you get the benefit of two products in one. The mask uses Rice Powder to gently exfoliate, which gets rid of the dead skin cells revealing fresh skin, while the detoxifying powers of Australian Green Clay combined with Eucalyptus, Lemon Myrtle and Calendula help to calm the skin. It's the easiest way to keep you lush toosh calm, clean and clear.

5. Consider permanent hair removal

Waxing and shaving can further irritate already angry hair follicles leading to a worsening of the condition. Consider zapping that peach fuzz with permanent hair reduction by laser or IPL.

6. Move it

If you have a desk job, make an effort to get up and move frequently. That booty deserves a shake, shake, shake.

7. Don't pick (no, seriously, don’t)

No touching, picking, squeezing or scratching! You heard us. While it might seem like this harmless thing we all know we shouldn't do but do anyway (guilty) it actually does (*shock*) make it worse. Picking your spots or prodding at your pimples isn't as satisfying when you realise it's what's making them worse or, even worse, spread.

Always see a doctor if you're not sure what your condition is, you are not getting relief or it gets worse.

Above all remember, butt acne happens but Such is here to help you find the solutions you need to love every inch of your beautiful skin.
